Personal Safety in Parking Lots and Ramps
Pre-Parking Safety:
- Secure all valuables out of sight before arriving at the
ramp or parking lot.
- Keep your doors locked and windows up while driving.
- Keep your purse and/or wallet hidden while driving.
During Parking:
- If you leave your key with an attendant, leave only your
car keys, and take your valuables with you.
- If you are self parking, lock your car.
- Park in an area that is well-lit.
Post-Parking Safety:
- Keep all valuables out of sight where they cannot be seen
from outside the car.
- Keep your parking stub.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- If someone approaches the car aggressively or tries to break
in, honk horn repeatedly.
- Note where your car is parked.
When Returning To Your Vehicle:
- When at all possible, return to your car in a group or with
an escort.
- Have your door key ready and in hand.
- Briefly look around your vehicle and inside before unlocking
or entering your vehicle.
- Lock your doors and start your engine as soon as you enter
your vehicle.
- Start the vehicle in motion as soon as you are situated.
- If you feel you are being followed while driving, find the
closest police station or fire station and honk your horn. An open business
or gas station where you can call the police is also a safe place to stop.
Do not stop on the road or drive home.
- If parked at a valet location, check your vehicle condition
before exiting the premises.
